MaxLinear

Broadband connections depend on chips that most people never see, and MaxLinear designs a lot of them. The Carlsbad, California company makes radio-frequency and mixed-signal semiconductors that go into cable modems, fiber-optic gear, Wi-Fi access points and the optical links inside data centers. It is fabless, meaning it designs chips and leaves manufacturing to outside foundries, a model that keeps capital costs low but exposes it to the same boom-and-bust cycle as its equipment-maker customers. Founded in 2003, MaxLinear has grown partly through acquisitions that pushed it from TV tuners into broadband access and infrastructure. Its results swing with carrier and cable spending on network upgrades, which has made recent years lumpy, though connectivity for data centers gives it a foothold in the AI-driven build-out.
