When an app slows down or crashes, someone has to figure out why, and Datadog is the tooling many companies reach for. Its platform pulls together monitoring of servers, databases, cloud services, application code, logs and security into one place, so engineers can watch how software behaves in production and get alerted when something breaks. Founded in 2010 and based in New York, Datadog rode the shift to cloud computing and microservices, where the number of moving parts exploded and older monitoring tools could not keep up. It sells on a usage-based model, so revenue grows as customers run more infrastructure and adopt more of its modules, a land-and-expand dynamic investors watch closely. Competition comes from Splunk, the cloud providers' own tools and a crowd of observability startups.
