Taiwan's first chip company, founded in 1980 as a spinoff of the government's ITRI research institute, United Microelectronics helped invent the pure-play foundry model that later made the island central to the industry. UMC builds chips to other companies' designs and never competes with its own customers, but unlike larger neighbor TSMC it has stepped back from the race to the smallest transistors. Instead it concentrates on mature and specialty processes, the reliable older nodes that go into power management, display drivers, connectivity and automotive chips, where demand is steadier and capital intensity lower. Based in Hsinchu, it is one of the largest foundries in the world by volume. The strategy trades the fat margins of leading-edge manufacturing for a defensible position in chips that every electronic product still needs.
