About Interactive Brokers Group, Inc.
Thomas Peterffy computerized options trading in the 1970s, and the firm that grew out of that work is Interactive Brokers. It runs a low-cost electronic brokerage aimed at active traders, professionals, and institutions rather than casual investors, offering direct access to stocks, options, futures, currencies, and bonds across more than 100 markets worldwide from a single account. The edge is automation and scale: Peterffy's insistence on building the plumbing himself keeps costs low, and the firm passes some of that on as tight pricing while still earning strong margins. It makes money from commissions, and heavily from interest on client cash and margin lending, so higher interest rates lift its profits directly. Account growth has been rapid, helped by a reputation for cheap financing and global reach. Peterffy, still the largest shareholder, remains one of the wealthiest people in American finance.
