Calamos Strategic Total Return

Income is the whole pitch here. Calamos Strategic Total Return is a closed-end fund, launched in 2004 and run by Calamos Advisors, that pays shareholders a steady monthly distribution. To fund it, the manager blends three asset types: at least half the portfolio in stocks for growth, with the rest in convertible securities and high-yield corporate bonds that throw off income and soften equity drawdowns. Like most closed-end funds it uses leverage, borrowing to amplify both returns and risk, and its shares trade on their own supply and demand, so the market price can drift above or below the value of the underlying holdings. It has often changed hands at a discount to net asset value, which value-minded buyers treat as a way in. Rising rates lift its borrowing costs, a standing pressure on the model.
