Every .com and .net web address in the world is routed through infrastructure that Verisign operates. Under a long-standing agreement with ICANN, the company runs the authoritative registry for those two top-level domains, charging registrars a set fee for each domain-year, and it also operates two of the internet's thirteen root name servers. That is close to a regulated toll booth on core internet plumbing: revenue is a function of the number of registered .com and .net names at a price capped by contract, which makes the business remarkably predictable and high-margin. Founded in 1995 and based in Reston, Virginia, Verisign has no meaningful competition for its core registries because the contracts are exclusive. The risks are unusual for a tech company: contract renewals, regulatory scrutiny of its pricing, and slow growth in domain registrations.
