Founded after its founder's wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, Tempus AI set out to bring data and software to medical treatment. The company runs genomic sequencing tests, mostly in oncology, and pairs the results with a large library of clinical records so doctors can match patients to therapies and trials. Eric Lefkofsky, who had built and sold several technology companies, started it in 2015 in Chicago and took it public in 2024. Two things drive the business: fees from diagnostic tests, and selling access to its de-identified data and analytics to drugmakers running research. The bet is that combining a testing operation with an enormous, connected dataset becomes more valuable as it grows. It competes with established genomic-testing firms, and like many diagnostics companies it has spent heavily and has yet to prove durable profits.
