Vertex Pharmaceuticals owns the market for cystic fibrosis, a genetic lung disease it treats with a family of drugs led by Trikafta that reach the underlying cause rather than just the symptoms. Founded in 1989 and based in Boston, it has spent that cash trying to diversify. Recent wins include Casgevy, one of the first approved gene-editing therapies, developed with CRISPR Therapeutics to treat sickle cell disease, and a newly approved non-opioid painkiller aimed at a market opioids have dominated for decades. The investment question is whether these newer products can grow into meaningful businesses before cystic fibrosis competition or patent expirations arrive. Vertex is known for pricing its therapies steeply and defending them hard.
