Chips have to be measured as they are built, and Nova makes the systems that do the measuring. The Israeli company supplies metrology tools that check the dimensions, materials and chemistry of structures on a wafer during fabrication, feeding data back so manufacturers can keep tiny features within tolerance. As transistors shrink and stack into three dimensions, that measurement problem gets harder, which has made precise metrology a growing slice of chipmakers' equipment budgets. Founded in 1993 and based in Rehovot, Israel, Nova sells to the world's leading foundries and memory makers and trades on both the Nasdaq and the Tel Aviv exchange. It is smaller than the giants of semiconductor equipment but occupies a specialized, high-margin corner of the market. Its fortunes rise and fall with the capital spending cycles of a handful of very large customers.
