About KOSPI 200 Index
South Korea's benchmark for its largest companies is the KOSPI 200, the local equivalent of the S&P 500. It holds the 200 biggest firms on the Korea Exchange, a group dominated by the export champions that define the Korean economy, above all Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, along with carmakers, banks and industrial groups. Weighted by free-float market value and introduced in 1994, it is the reference point for Korean equity funds and futures. One thing sets it apart: it underpins one of the most heavily traded options markets in the world, a favorite of both local and international derivatives traders. Because Korea is a manufacturing and technology exporter, the index is sensitive to global demand for chips and cars, to the strength of the won, and to trade tensions. For investors it is the main window into a market often valued cheaply relative to its earnings, a discount known as the Korea discount.
