IonQ

Among the companies racing to build a practical quantum computer, IonQ takes the trapped-ion approach, holding individual charged atoms in place with electromagnetic fields and manipulating them with lasers to act as qubits. Backers of the method argue those qubits are more stable and identical than the superconducting circuits used by rivals like IBM and Google. Founded in 2015 by researchers from the University of Maryland and Duke, and based in College Park, Maryland, IonQ went public through a SPAC in 2021 and sells access to its machines over the major cloud platforms. Real commercial quantum advantage is still years away, so the company generates little revenue relative to its valuation, and the stock trades on expectations about a technology that may or may not scale as hoped.
