Making a chip requires impossibly pure materials and a factory kept almost free of contamination, and Entegris specializes in exactly that. The company supplies the filters, specialty chemicals and gases, and the ultra-clean containers and handling systems that carry wafers and materials through a fab without introducing particles or impurities that would ruin the chip. Much of what it sells is consumed in the manufacturing process, so a meaningful part of its revenue recurs with wafer volumes rather than depending only on new equipment purchases, which smooths the semiconductor cycle. As chips shrink and add more layers, the tolerance for contamination falls, which steadily raises the materials content per wafer in Entegris's favor. Its 2022 purchase of CMC Materials added chemical-mechanical planarization slurries and pads. Formed in 1999 and based in Billerica, Massachusetts, Entegris is a materials play on rising chip complexity.
