About Invesco DB Commodity Index Tracking Fund
Commodities are the whole point of DBC, one of the oldest broad commodity funds still trading. It holds futures contracts on fourteen of the most heavily traded raw materials, spanning energy like crude oil and gasoline, metals such as gold, aluminum and copper, and agricultural staples including corn, wheat and sugar. Invesco built it to track the DBIQ Optimum Yield Diversified Commodity Index, which chooses the specific futures month that minimizes the drag from rolling expiring contracts. Energy usually carries the largest weight, so the fund tends to move with oil. Investors use it as an inflation hedge and a portfolio diversifier, since commodities often rise when stocks and bonds struggle. One wrinkle: because it trades futures directly, holders receive a Schedule K-1 at tax time rather than the simpler 1099.
