iShares Total Return Active ETF

BRTR packages BlackRock's Total Return bond strategy into an ETF. It is an actively managed core-plus fixed-income fund that buys corporate and government debt from around the world across the maturity spectrum, with high-yield exposure capped at roughly a fifth of the portfolio. The managers move among sectors, credit qualities and durations to try to beat the broad US bond market rather than simply match it, which is what the 'plus' in core-plus refers to. For many investors this is meant to sit at the center of a bond allocation, doing the diversifying and income work a total-market index fund does but with a manager steering around risks like rate moves and weak credits. BlackRock launched it in December 2023, giving ETF buyers access to a strategy the firm had long run in mutual funds.
