BlackBerry once made the phones that ran every boardroom and now makes almost none of them. The Canadian company, founded in 1984 as Research In Motion, dominated mobile email in the 2000s before the iPhone erased its hardware business, and it has spent the years since reinventing itself as a software firm. Today it sells cybersecurity products and, through its QNX division, the embedded operating system that runs inside the dashboards and driver-assist systems of tens of millions of cars. That automotive software is the more interesting half of the story, tying BlackBerry to the shift toward software-defined vehicles. Based in Waterloo, Ontario, the company also holds a large patent portfolio from its handset era. The stock draws a mix of turnaround believers and, periodically, meme-driven traders, and it moves more on sentiment than the modest revenue would suggest.
