Crude Oil (Brent)

Most of the world prices its oil off Brent crude. Pumped from fields in the North Sea off northwestern Europe, it is a light, low-sulfur grade that refiners value, and because it is loaded onto tankers at sea, it sets the reference price for waterborne crude traded across Europe, Africa and Asia, roughly two-thirds of the global market. That makes it the international counterpart to America's landlocked WTI, and the gap between the two benchmarks is watched as a signal of regional supply and shipping costs. Brent futures trade on the Intercontinental Exchange and are quoted in dollars per barrel. Its price responds to the biggest forces in energy: OPEC production decisions, wars and sanctions, the pace of global growth, and the slow shift toward cleaner energy. For much of the world, when the news says the oil price moved, it means Brent.
