Wheat

Wheat feeds the world as one of its handful of staple grains, milled into the flour behind bread, pasta and noodles and used as animal feed. Because it is grown across many countries and eaten almost everywhere, its price is a global affair, and the most-watched benchmark is the Chicago soft red winter wheat futures contract, traded on the CME and quoted in cents per bushel. That price swings on the harvest: drought, floods or frost in any major growing region can tighten supply, and because wheat is so essential, those moves feed straight into food prices and, at the extreme, political unrest. Geopolitics matters enormously, since a handful of countries around the Black Sea, led by Russia, dominate exports, and war or export bans there can send prices soaring. Wheat is a commodity where weather in a few key regions and the stability of a few big exporters set the tone.
