Natural Gas

From home furnaces to power plants to fertilizer factories, natural gas runs a huge share of modern energy. It is mostly methane, and in the United States its price is set at the Henry Hub, a pipeline junction in Louisiana that anchors the futures traded on the NYMEX exchange, quoted in dollars per million British thermal units. Gas is notoriously volatile, more so than oil, because it is hard to store and expensive to move: a cold winter or a hot summer can send prices spiking, while a mild season or a glut of shale production can crush them. The rise of liquefied natural gas, which lets it be shipped across oceans, has begun tying the once-regional US market to global demand, especially from Europe and Asia. It is a commodity driven by weather, storage levels, shale output and the export boom.
