Alibaba is the Amazon of China, and then some. Founded in 1999 by Jack Ma, it runs the country's largest online shopping platforms in Taobao and Tmall, where hundreds of millions of consumers buy everything from groceries to electronics, and it earns most of its money from the advertising and commissions those marketplaces generate. Beyond retail, it operates China's biggest cloud-computing business, a logistics network, and stakes in digital payments and entertainment. Based in Hangzhou, Alibaba spent years as a market darling before a regulatory crackdown in China wiped out much of its value and forced it to restructure. The stock now trades as a bet on two things: a recovery in Chinese consumer spending, and the payoff from its heavy investment in AI and cloud. As a US-listed Chinese company, it also carries the political and delisting risks that shadow the whole group.
